Rio Theater-a Monte Rio classic

Saturday, November 19th, 2011 | Posted by

Located in an old quonset hut, just north of the Monte Rio bridge, the Rio has been serving the local community for close to a half-century. In addition to running first-run films at low prices, the marquee regularly announces birthdays of locals, great and near great, and has hosted benefits such as a joint fundraiser called the Pirate (the film was “Pirate Radio”) fest for Guerneville’s KGGV 95.1 FM and Occidental’s KOWS 107.3 FM, where live musicians entertained and many folks came in costume. Well known entertainers such as Richie Havens have also appeared there.

The schedule for the near future includes:

on Saturday November 19 at 7 P.M. and Sunday November 20 at 3 P.M., The Ides of March with George Clooney and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rated  “R”

Friday and Saturday November 25-26 at 7 P.M. and Sunday November 27 at 3 P.M. Puss In Boots with Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Billy Bob Thornton. Rated “PG”

The theater is closed for vacation and will reopen with “Arthur Christmas” on December 23, followed by “Happy Feet Two” and for New Year’s Eve, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

Where: 20396 Bohemian Hwy., Monte Rio

Phone: 865-0913
