Read a Press Democrat profile on Vira here

She has worked tirelessly with marine biologists, ecologists and fisherman, barnacles and conservationists for almost a quarter-century and the crux of her mission involves  educating, restoring  and protecting creatures of the sea. Her methods employ  awareness, entertainment, responsible stewardship and a tsunami of fun.
The Mermaid Festival’s  home port  this year is again the Russian River’s most family-friendly venue, the Rio Nido Roadhouse.

All-day treats and entertainment will include environmental exhibits, grilled local seafood, children’s activities, raffle prizes and a silent auction for two of sculptor Don Canaday’s “Mer-Barrels”.
Vira will be schooling with the Shoal Sisters, Yerevan, the belly dancing mermaid and Thom Shouse AKA The Tailman.
Julie Faye’s Dance Troop will kick off the briny entertainment followed by BerlinSF singing “Circle of Life”, Lauren Huffman vocalizing “Little Mermaid” and a variety of other acts  capped by guitarist Levi Loyd and George Heagerty w/Jane Fossgreen on saxophone.

Yerevan-after the dance

There will also be a drum circle whose purpose is to bless salmon coming upriver to spawn and to ensure the fisherman a safe and fishful season.
The price is $5 for adults and  free for those under 12, with proceeds benefiting the Community Clean Water Institute.
