The Poseidon sails into the R3 for a Christmas celebration
The R3 Resort is hosting a gala Community Christmas Party and everyone is invited. Rodger Jensen, Barkeep Supremo, chef and man-about-town says the theme will be The Poseidon Adventure and plans on turning a good chunk of R3’s back room upside down and dubbing it the S.S. Poseidon.
With a bit of help, Jensen will be preparing treats for the ravenous including turkey and ham as well as home-made lasagne, and would be overjoyed if party goers brought along a dish to add to the swiftly expanding menu.
There is no charge, says Jensen, adding it’s “all about giving back.”
On December 25, according to Leslie Sachrison who initiated the event, there will also be a Christmas Day Celebrity Bartenders Marathon from noon until midnight featuring two non-bartenders every 30 minutes. The monies collected will benefit five local charities/non-profits and, says Sachrison, “ALL collected tips (and we don’t care how they get into the tip jar) so start Collecting NOW!!” One of those signed up is Sandy-Mama Reinhardt, who will be bartending beginning at 10 p.m. Reinhardt heads Mama’s Leather Family and among other things, hold an annual Holiday Toy Drive. Mama’s credo is “No one can do everything. Still everyone can do something. Together, we can do anything”
The R3 will feature X-mas videos and Christmas music, and plans on making it the Homiest Holiday Party in town.
Along with recreating “Hell Upside Down”, a few R3ers are considering adding a
Shelley Winters look-alike contest. Winters was cast as Jewish heavyweight swimmer Belle Rosen, and turns into a skinny first-responder in her’s and every movie goer’s mind.
If you never saw it or just don’t remember, the S.S. Poseidon was swamped on
New Year’s Eve by a 90-foot wave leaving Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons, an illustrious group of passengers, struggling to survive and escape. Based on the novel of the same name by Paul Gallico, it won a Special Achievement Academy Award for Special Effects and a Best Original Song for “The Morning After”, which became an “ear worm” for thousands of film fans for years after.
Despite cooking one up, Jensen himself is an incurable ham, and may well be persuaded to render his interpretation of the song.
Parts of the film were shot aboard The RMS Queen Mary which encountered and survived a huge rogue wave in 1942, becoming the inspiration for Gallico’s book.
R3 party goers need not bring their wet suits but in Guerneville, anything can
happen and usually does.
